Evaluation of Practice Task

Here are some questions evaluating our practice music video 'I wanna be sedated' by Offspring

Identify the task as well as the song/artist?

Our opractice A2 media task was to construst a media music video to the song 'I wanna be sedated' by Offspring.

How have you used digital technology during the construstion of your video?
During the making of the music video we used a digital camera, tripod and a tape in order for our filming to happen. Once filming was done use used an iMac computer to upload our footage from the camera onto iMovieHD. Once all the footage had been uploaded we used the iMovie software to compose all the editing in order for the music video to be completed. We used special effects such as speeding up the footage and putting some in reverse in order to make the video a success, as it went well with the song. The group and i were happy with the vifeo we needed to create a youtube account and a googlemail account so we can upload our video to youtube, so we can put it on the blog.

Discuss the planning stage of your production and the steps that you went through?
The planning of the production, is very important as it gives you a guideline of how the task is going to be completed. When tghe song was given to us, we prinited of the lyrics and thought of ideas of how we were going about filming the piece. We created an action plan which is below which covers the majority of our planning. There were many videos of the song on Youtube, however, there wasn't an official video, which didn't really help us with ideas. this allowed us to be creative, as the music video was all our ideas, which helped make it more enjoyable.

How did your research into music videos contribute to the development of your own production?
In order to make our video as successful as possible the group research rock genre convention, which helped us to use props associated with the rock genre. From previous years who took media and produced simillar products we watched through their to analyse which things worked and which didn't work as well. this gave us a brief idea of what things to include etc.

What do you think are the main strengths and weaknesses in your production?
I feel our music video contained many stengths such as the storyline went well with the lyrics even those we used lyrics cards, which made the audience more aware. There was a good use of editing and a variety of shots used. I believe that the lip syncing worked well, considering it was a hard task to manage, although once section could have been done better, which would contribute to a weakness towards our music video. The group and myself found the song very repetive which caused us to have a lack of shots, as we only had a short time to film and we needed to make use of the setting and props available. With audience feedback, they said that there was:
- a good link between lyrics and content
- good use of the clock
- editing was good
- the lyrics cards helped to memorise the lyrics
- the running around of the tree went well with the fast motion as well as the story behind it
- it was cut to the beat of the song
- lip syncing was on time
The majority of the feedback recieved was all very positive.

Evaluation of practice media music video.Natalie Murray

The song we were given to make our practice film was "I wanna be sedated" by Offspring.
We used digital technology when creating our video. Using a digital camera to film our footage which was then uploaded to the iMacs using iMovieHD, a sofware programe on the macs. The iMovie software also allowed us to edit the media film. I did the majority of the editing but the whole group made decisions to how the final peice would look. we used some editing tecniques like speed up and reverse to create the nessessary affects for the film, this was all using iMovieHD. After this we uploaded our video to be veiwed on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HaSZYRQvjQ and then onto our blog.

When planning, we listened to the lyrics and printed them off. We then analysied the lyrics, brainstorming ideas to what we could possibly do for our peice. We also looked on youtube.com for the official video but were unsuccessful in finding the video itslef, this gave us an advantage to find something orginal for the song and we also had the additional exciting challenge as to think of something new. We enjoyed this as we didnt feel like we were copying anything from the orginal as there wasnt one. Our initial idea was to make a mini set almost using miniture figures such as a model areoplane, limo ect. but due to a time restraint we had to change out idea. We planned using the lyrics and broke the song down into musical breaks, chorus' and verses. When we broke the lyrics down we decided that we'd make each line a different thing as the song was upbeat and the song broke down into lines easier. We planned by looking at other media videos which we found conventions such as narratice and performance. using videos of a similar genre music (rock) we found that many had performance of instruments and lip syncing. Despite conforming conventions in this way, we also subverted them by not using a story as we found it too difficult to find a plot for our song and therefore took the theme ofthe song instead which was rock and as we took the lyrics like "sedated","Insane" and & "loco" to help towards our themed idea.
I think our we had many strengths in our music video including the subversion. Many other groups followed a narrative whereas we used the main theme of lyric cards and performance. our one weakness i feel is toward the end of the video we didn't have a specific shot so used the imac filming software to film a short section, unfortunately i didnt work so well so we wouldnt do this again. With audience feed back we had some positive feedback suchs as: the link between the lyrics and content (like our plan suggested), the clock shot, the editing to fit the beat of the music, the fast paced song fitting with the beat of the song.
