Use of Font on a Magazine Advertisement

The purpose of an advertisement is typically to attract future customers and sell a product. There are many factors that contribute to an advertisement's success, including a clear marketing message, persuasive writing and ability to capture the reader's attention. One important, yet often overlooked, aspect of an effective advertisement is font choice. Sometimes, the difference between a future customer reading an ad or ignoring it depends on the font. The following information is an explanation of how different fonts are used and the effect that they have.

Serif
Serif fonts typically have curled features at the ends of the letters, numbers and symbols. They are commonly used in the body copy of advertisements, and include Times New Roman, Garamond, SchoolBook, Georgia, Baskerville, Sanford and Oxford. Some experts say that the serif font can boost reading speed as well as increase reading comprehension, because the curved letter strokes help guide readers to the next letter. This type of font is usually best for direct mail, newspaper, magazine and other printed types of advertisements.

Sans-Serif
Sans-serif fonts, also called gothic fonts, are commonly used in web-based advertisements, including landing pages, emails and banner ads. They are easy to read, and include Arial, Calibri, Verdana, Tahoma, Trebuchet, Lucinda Grande and Helvetica. This type of font usually appears to be more modern than the serif font. Internet advertisements typically use sans-serif fonts in headlines, along with serif fonts in the body copy.

Semi-Serif
When an advertiser wants to use the same font in both web and print advertisements, semi-serif fonts are commonly used. They typically have a fixed width and are similar to traditional newspaper fonts, as well as commonly used in text-only email advertisements. Some examples of this type of font include Courier, Courier New, Monaco, Portobello and Divona.

Alternative
Some advertisers use customized fonts to fit the company's branding message. These fonts can look like a child's handwriting or calligraphy. Many of these types of fonts utilize characteristics from more mainstream fonts, such as serif or sans-serif, but change the height or width of the letters. These fonts are usually more successful when used in the headlines or subheads, and in conjunction with a more traditional font in the body copy of the ad.

Use of Colour on a magazine Advertisement

One of the first things you notice about any advertisement is the colors. In ads that don’t have a multimedia advantage like in a magazine, the colors and design are the only things holding the ad together. Colors, therefore, are one of the things that advertising experts study, especially since they can have so many different connotations in different contexts. It’s essential to use colors to project an image of the product—is it a warm, family oriented-thing? Is it a bright, colorful kiddy thing? Is it a novelty? Is it a cool teen thing? All of these factors are portrayed by the color schemes of advertisement, which connects the colors to the simple, hardcore human factor.

Magazine Research

To create a magazine advertisement we will research a range of different music magazine advertisements to compile conventions to create our own which will feature a still image which will relate to the music video itself as well as information on the release date and obviously album name, etc.

Lilly Allens “Knock em out” was released as an independent single so there aren't any available images, adverts or even a music video for us to extract images from to help us create our digi- pack or advert.

We each analysed a music advertisment, highlighting some of the conventions which we then used as a basis when creating our main advert.

Conventions of a CD Advertisement

There are several conventions of an advertisement for a music advertisement, a typical music CD would consist of the following:

  • An iconic picture of the artist, usually the picture that is on the album cover.
  • Background information of the record label, usually consisting of their logo or brand name.
  • The logo and brand name of the artist, this helps to promote themselves to the public. Also it helps the audience identify the CD they are looking for.
  • The Contact information through the means of websites, email addresses and information on the record label, this is so the consumer an get in touch with people involved in making the CD.
  • A review of the CD, which may include the favorite tracks of the person being interviewed, and why this their favorite track, this may also include a star rating from a particular music magazine or company such as NME.
  • The people that feature in the track, and some of the people involved in the manufacture on the songs on the CD
  • Outline the genre of the CD, and what what was the artist's thoughts whilst creating the album, if they had any influences from other artists, f if thier was a theme to the CD.
  • An overall genre of the type of music the CD consists of so the consumers can know what to expect to hear and feel when they listen to the CD.
  • Other relevant information on the artist for example their tour dates, album signings etc.
